The text message I received on my phone which is the same chain message received by other Cebuano.
"Attention: Off daw unya ang mga cellphone from 10:30 pm to 3:30 am kay kusog ang radiation tungod sa cosmic rays, nucli atomic. Gibalita na ni Kuya Kim us sa BBC News sa cable. Delikado makamatay daw ayaw idulog ang cellphone.--- Pass sa uban guys,,,"
The text message above says that we should turn off our mobile devices from 10:30 PM to 3:30 AM because of the strong radiation caused by cosmic rays, nuclei atomic. The text message added a known TV personality and even the famous international news to have reported it. It also asserted that it is fatal if the mobile devices will be put near the head or underneath the pillow.
The Facebook status of my friend was just to confirm about the veracity of the message he received. It is one of the advantage of social media today. You can ask the professionals on this field to verify controversial news and reports through Facebook or Twitter. You can also Google and find the appropriate Science Organization and read report directly from them.
So, what exactly is happening?

On September 8, 2014 Monday, A class M4.6 solar flare was unleashed by the sun with an accompanying Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). It was followed by an X1.6 class flare on September 10, 2014 with CME travelling faster. M-5 is a medium sized flare, but the second flare is larger.
Solar flare is a rapid burst of radiation from the active region of the sun which, if large enough like M class and worst X class, can produce CME- a billion ton clouds of solar plasma. CME blasts that is directed to the Earth can damage power grids and satellite navigation, GPS, and disrupt radio communications.
There are six class of Solar flare.
- A - Lowest class of solar flare.
- B - Classified as just higher than class, but not very interesting.
- C - Small solar flare that rarely create a significant electromagnetic disturbance.
- M - Medium large flare that can cause moderate blackout in the daylight part of the Earth. Stronger M class with CME can cause geomagnetic storm that can create aurora effect.
- X - A big and strong flare that can cause strong blackouts in the daylight portion of the Earth. This type of flare can cause strong geomagnetic storm disturbance.
- Super X - Strongest but very rare.
In every class of solar flare, there is a scale of 1 to 10. The solar flare that happened on September 8, 2014 belong to the class M which has a scale of 4.6. While, the second solar flare is a strong one since it is in the X class with a scale of 1.6.
But before I continue, I have to clarify that COSMIC RAYS ALERT IS A HOAX because the government agency does not issue a statement about it and it lacks proof that the known personalities cited reported it. As of now, we are safe as the Earth's atmosphere absorbs the suns harmful radiation and protect the humankind.
A program scientist with NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory speaks out, "People on the ground really don't have to worry," said Lika Guhathakurta.
According to the Space Weather Prediction Center, the geomagnetic storming due to Solar flare and CME will continue until September 14, 2014.
